Bittersweet: The Restoration ContinuesThe first book, Bittersweet, was published in 1984 because Laurie Lewis, at age 17, wanted her story to be a help and encouragement to others affected by teen pregnancy. We were astounded to discover just how many people of all ages and genders are in that category. We received many letters from girls in the same situation as Laurie. But the letters also came from both men and women- family members and friends. We also heard from those who had suffered abortions and people who had been adopted or were adopting a child. Then there were those who had simply been deeply touched by God’s amazing exchange system, available to everyone: “Beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for a spirit of heaviness.” (Isaiah 61:3 KJV)

The new book, Bittersweet,The Restoration Continues, is NOT just a beautiful story with a surprise ending. It is NOT a message about a model family, totally unapproachable because everyone is so “wonderful and healthy.” It is NOT a message of “if you do it this way your story will turn out just like ours.” It IS our own, personal ‘Parable’, a true, real-life PICTURE of the restoration God wants to do in each heart and life. Circumstances have nothing to do with it. God has everything to do with it. The only thing we have to do is to continually put all the broken pieces into God’s hands.

Endorsements for Bittersweet: The Restoration Continues

“Twenty five years ago I watched the Lewis family work through the brokenness, pain and loss described in Bittersweet. Now, twenty-five years later, I am also witnessing the remarkable restoration and joy that God has brought to the whole family. You will be encouraged that God does not forget the cries of our heart.”

“Bittersweet is pure joy. Bring handkerchiefs! Gay Lewis frames a window to God’s heart in her deeply moving story of her daughter’s unplanned pregnancy. She walks us through the gripping pain of crisis in a tightly-knit family, the bittersweet loss of her first granddaughter given for adoption, and the restoration of her own daughter. Over the years the family walks paths of renewal and grace they never expected to encounter. Then, in a finish that only God could fashion, we are shown that He is always at work, even when we can’t see Him, preparing the best for us.”

“There are so many tragic and unhappy stories about unexpected and unwanted pregnancies out of wedlock. Gay Lewis poignantly shares one that is beautifully framed in the context of the grace and transforming love of Jesus Christ. This story is born out of her family’s personal pain and heartache, and majestically moves into joy and celebration by the touch of the Master’s hand.”
